By â€Å"property and places,† he meant forts, arsenals, and custom houses. Lincoln's closing passage had great beauty and literary power. S. history. During the Civil War, Lincoln's first task was to win the war. He had to view nearly all other matters in relation to the war. S. history. Lincoln became a remarkable war leader. Some historians believe he was the chief architect of the Union's victorious military strategy. This strategy called for Union armies to advance against the enemy on all fronts at the same time. Lincoln also insisted that the objective of the Union armies should be the destruction of opposing forces, not the conquest of territory. Lincoln changed generals several times because he could not find one who would fight the war the way he wanted it fought. When he finally found such a general, Ulysses S. Grant, Lincoln stood firmly behind him. Lincoln's second great task was to keep up Northern morale through the horrible war in which many relatives in the North and South fought against one another. He understood that the Union's resources vastly exceeded those of the Confederacy, and that the Union would eventually triumph if it remained dedicated to victory. For this reason, Lincoln used his great writing and speechmaking abilities to spur on his people. If the Union had been destroyed, the United States could have become two, or possibly more, nations. These nations separately could not have become as prosperous and important as the United States is today. By preserving the Union, Lincoln influenced the course of world history. By ending slavery, he helped assure the moral strength of the United States. His own life story, too, has been important. He rose from humble origin to the nation's highest office. In July 1862, with the war going badly for the North, Congress passed a law freeing all Confederate slaves who came into Union lines. At about that same time, Lincoln decided to change his stand on slavery. But he waited for a Union military victory, so that his decision would not appear to be a desperate act. On Sept. 22, 1862, five days after Union forces won the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln issued a preliminary proclamation. It stated that if the rebelling states did not return to the Union by Jan. 1, 1863, he would declare their slaves to be â€Å"forever free. The South rejected Lincoln's policy, and so he issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. Lincoln took this action as commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States. He called it â€Å"a fit and necessary war measure. † The Emancipation Proclamation did not actually free a single slave, because it affected only areas under Confederate control. It excluded slaves in the border states and in such Southern areas under Union control as Tennessee and parts of Louisiana and Virginia. But it did lead to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. This amendment, which became law on Dec. 18, 1865, ended slavery in all parts of the United States. As the abolitionists had predicted, the Emancipation Proclamation strengthened the North's war effort and weakened the South's. By the end of the war, more than 500,000 slaves had fled to freedom behind Northern lines. Many of them joined the Union Army or Navy or worked for the armed forces as laborers. By allowing blacks to serve in the Army and Navy, the Emancipation Proclamation helped solve the North's problem of declining enlistments. About 200,000 black soldiers and sailors, many of them former slaves, served in the armed forces. They helped the North win the war. The Emancipation Proclamation also hurt the South by discouraging Britain and France from entering the war. Both of those nations depended on the South to supply them with cotton, and the Confederacy hoped that they would fight on its side. But the proclamation made the war a fight against slavery. Lincoln†s decisions and Emancipation Proclamation led to the 15th amendment which freed slaves. Without it, life today would be much different. He changed life for all Americans, black and white. Many false stories have grown up about this famous speech. One story says that the people of Lincoln's time did not appreciate the speech. But the reaction of the nation's newspapers largely followed party lines. Most of the newspapers that backed the Republican Party, the party to which Lincoln belonged, liked the speech. A majority of the newspapers that supported the Democratic Party did not. Edward Everett, the principal speaker at the dedication, wrote to Lincoln: â€Å"I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes. *6 Abrahams two minute speech had more of an impact that a two hour speech. Lincoln touched many hearts and others despised him. It does not matter if they liked him or not, they were still affected by his words and actions. Abraham Lincoln affected the U. S. in many different ways. He led the United States during the Civil War, one of the most brutal battles in history. Ultimately producing lots of ghost towns, the rough, violent life of so many Western movies reached its purest state in the Nevada silver camps, and the economy and politics of the state have been deeply marked ever since. They dont shovel silver off the ground anymore but sweep it instead, off the tables of Las Vegas and Reno. Nevada horn silver seems to be gone forever. Scouring the Web for specimens pans out nothing. You can find silver chloride on the Web under its mineral name of chlorargyrite or cerargyrite, but the specimens arent horn silver, even though thats what cerargyrite means in scientific Latin. Theyre little crystals from underground mines, and the sellers seem apologetic about how unexciting they look. Still. Take a moment to imagine  the thrill of stepping back into this period of American history and picking up chunks of silver right off the surface of the ground, like so much gravel... and gaining a fortune.

Mental illnesses have been recognized and acknowledged for thousands of years, but the way they had once been treated and handled differ from the way they are dealt with today. There was a point in time where all mental illnesses were thought of as one and they were treated in a similar way. Many theories were associated with the cause of these mental disorders and many of them today are deemed as obnoxious. Emil Kraeplin, a German physician was one of the first to categorize mental disorders and he used the term dementia praecox for individuals who had symptoms that we now associate with schizophrenia. All these terms imply the changing climatic conditions of the world, putting forth the bare reality that mankind is facing today. To increase income we have come up with industrialization, that not only resulted in mass production of a wide variety of products making our life luxuries but has also brought with it the concepts of deforestation, all kinds of pollution and a constantly rising temperature. A little too late, the world has realized that changes need to be made to the way we live if we intend to sustain mankind on the once luscious green earth. To make up for the cons of the fast moving concrete world, every human today is on the path to make amends to ensure that the environment around us is habitable (Intergovernmental, 2014). One might be wondering if the climate has really changed that disastrously. It might seem fine today, because climate changes affect us just the way they affect the glaciers in the Artic. They melt the world. Slowly, so slowly that we dont even realize when it started (Cohen, 2014). The changing climatic conditions may not has a huge impact today, but our future generations would be suffering from floods, drought, scarcity of natural resources and rising temperature if a step towards the betterment of environment is not taken (Trenberth, 2014). But I dont need to point this out to you. You have already seen how the environment has degraded. Do you remember the temperature of Canada a couple of years ago? Was it like it is today? Did so many natural calamities occur at this frequent intervals? Was is so hot, so cold, so rainy? I am sure you see the difference when you speak to your grandchildren about the places you lived your childhood in. So what has changed today? The dependency on technology and the need to earn more. We all are the captives of technology and development but make no mistake, technology has several positive effects. It is our responsibility to decrease the side effects of the same. There are several ways like gardening, planting trees, using water and other natural resources carefully, cycling rather than using cars etc. to help the environment. But there are also ways were a little more investment would not only create a better world but would also help create jobs and increase the economic conditions of Canada (Intergovernmental, 2015) Our country is bountiful in crude oil, minerals and timber. However, if these resources are consumed at the same rate as today, it is only a matter of time before we run out of fuel. An investment in natural energies such as the solar and wind energy would help in sustaining the natural resources of Canada. This is a small investment and will open the doors to countless energy industries creating jobs for growing next generation bio-fuels, building solar panels, innovative battery technology and so on. A billion dollars invested in a coal fired power plant creates around 900 jobs, but when the same is invested in solar would create 1,900 jobs and when invested in wind would create 3,300. Also, it is an understatement to say that coal mining is a dangerous job. So simply changing to an alternative energy rather than using up the non-renewable energy sources would help in creating a better environment and at the same time employing large number of people (Rogelj, 2013). One other activity is decreasing our carbon foot print. To do the same we would have to shift from high carbon activities to low carbon activities. These low carbon activities are labor intense hence are strong drivers for job creation, especially in clean transport, recycling, and clean infrastructure and energy sectors (Stone, 2012). Investing in small changes in and around our houses and work environment such as using insulated doors, gardening, using programmable thermostats etc. would create jobs in the small scale industry. Using energy efficient infrastructure could be an extremely simple way to save the earth. Why use more power on an equipment that would not only effect your pocket but also release toxic gases such as Chloro Fluoro Carbons or pollute in some other forms, when investing in an energy efficient equipment would result not only in saving money, but also would consume less of the natural resources. Not to mention, need for innovation and creative technology that would help in a greener earth is at its zenith today. Several small scale industries and startups such as the Toronto based Builddirect technologies inc or the Berlin-based Solarkisk today are coming up with plans and equipment that would help everyone to adopt to the climatic changes (Bulkeley, 2013). It is us who have to give these companies the chance to help us create a better environment. These companies have the ability to increase the hiring capacity in the current industry providing employment to simple labor as well as innovators who work on either sides of development (Hoffman, 2013). Energy industries may not need a lot of manual labor once set up but have the potential to increase the need to labor for pipelines, transportation and manual set up activities. It is true that all the above ideas would cost us more than the conventional methods. But here we are not only giving our best to make sure we have a greener earth but are also providing employment to countless individuals. It is our responsibility to make sure that we take up the opportunity to see the bright side of a climate change investment, where we help create jobs and increase the countrys economy.
